About 81% done...

Saturday, November 5, 2016

Switching to oils --about 70% finished.

Sunday, October 30, 2016

Did this some time ago on a small scale.  Doing it again 3' by 4': Basics in acrylic and now switching to oils.

Monday, October 17, 2016

Almost done with this one.
Here's how it ended up after multiple additions.  It's a night race and a frame from a dream.  I've never drawn a real race car and do not even know if they have headlights.
The size is 3 ft x 4 ft.

Monday, September 26, 2016

Toned the canvas reddish brown and as I sat looking at the canvas I could see an old race car and someone at the side of the track waving -- couldn't help but sketch in with white charcoal pencil what was already there --like seeing something in a cloud.. now I'll either continue playing with it or just retone the canvas...

Did this on cardboard some time ago---will do it larger on canvas...base is acrylic--plan to use oil for the finish.

Doing this one again in larger format 30" x 40"  Acrylic (at least so far)

Tuesday, May 17, 2016

Okay I have done two versions of this little 1885 photograph. I feel like I know the family perhaps on a stroll after Church looking into the window of the photographer's shop in New York. The daughter is quite pretty and dumpy mom is holding her perhaps a bit tight.  Dad stands a little distant, his whiskers perhaps exuding the smell of smoke.  The horse is not likely theirs. The second version has a white border more reminiscent of a photo. Although there is some detail, I tried to keep it loose and painterly. The size is 3 feet by 4 feet, acrylic, umbers and black (will never use Mars black again---does not spread well --better to make yr own black), 1/2" brush except for a 1/4" brush several places.

Friday, May 13, 2016

About 50% finished with version #2. Using just one brush so far -1/2".

Wednesday, May 11, 2016

Three colors - acrylic - burnt umber, raw umber and white.  White chalk pencil for the sketching...one brush for both paintings (1/2").  Doing about 30M/day.

Sunday, May 8, 2016

Decided to do this one again with a one inch white border all around --after all I got the 3 x 4 ft canvases at two-for-one sale.

Tuesday, May 3, 2016

A few minor touch ups and I'll be done...

05/01/16
Going very slow on this - could do it in about a week but I put in 10-30 minutes/day between work, tennis, karaoke and life.

Saturday, April 30, 2016

Making a bit of progress -been doing about 20 minutes a day...due day job.

Wednesday, April 27, 2016

Making a bit of progress.

Getting a start and making a bit of progress on the 3 ft x 4 ft version. Using acrylic.  May do it one more time in oil.

Making a bit of progress
Mom has this hanging in her place.  Did this watercolor in 1983.  An Italian restaurant on College Avenue in Berkeley.

Filling in the display window..

Wednesday, March 23, 2016

Moving forward. This feels like a family.  Somewhat dowdy mom holding her dear daughter tight and the somewhat distant husband, with a hat just a bit small, lost in the wonder of the photographs of famous actors and artist/writers, a shop display made possible by recent advances in plate glass.

Sunday, March 20, 2016

Still working on this one.
22" x 28"

Another portrait - In process - combination of a friend and imagination.

Saturday, March 19, 2016

Half-size - almost done.

I love this photo from the 1880s
Several people looking at photographs on display in a photographer's studio window
I think they are together--arms linked. I will do a small painting 12" x 16" and then perhaps a really large one.

Tuesday, March 8, 2016

This is half-size of the original which I understand to be 4' x 5'...I am working off a small photo from a magazine.  About 70% fini at this point.
I gave these two paintings to Stan my tennis buddy as he knows the race horses very well and is always doing things for others:

Moving along:
About 70% there - 18 x 24" oil
Chile Hassam
Boston Commons at Twilight 1885
The size is 42 x 60
Original is in the Museum of Fine Arts Boston

Childe lived on Tremont street and walked these blocks daily.
This painting has fascinated me for some time and I am  copying it in several sizes
to reverse engineer his methods...
